THE WEEKLY EDIT:
Listening to: The In-Between Cooking Playlist!
It felt right to make you a cooking playlist for this issue. The theme? Nancy Meyers, of course. I hope you love it.
Planning: A Barbie-themed birthday party
My oldest, who never asks for anything, has requested a Barbie-themed birthday so I’m deep in Barbieland trying to make her dreams come true. Any and all suggestions are welcome (how cute are these cookies?!)!
Watching: The Holdovers
I watched Da'Vine Joy Randolph and Paul Giamatti win Golden Globes (and I believe they both won Emmy’s, too) for their roles in The Holdovers, so it must be good! It’s available on Peacock.
Using: Lovevery Newborn Kit
Jack loves hanging on his little mat and engaging with high contrast black and white objects via Lovevery (I love this brand - they help take the guesswork out of developmental activities to do with a baby). His particular favorites are the gloves and sensory links.
Curious about: Summer Fridays Lip Oil
There’s been so much hype pre-launch around these lip oils. ‘Dream Lip Oil’ promises a non-sticky, high-shine tint and deep hydration. The question is, which color?
Ordered: Aureum Belt
My pre-pregnancy belts don’t fit and I’m in need of a good one so when I saw that Aureum launched Vol. 2 of belts today, I ordered this one (you can use code GERI20 for 20% off their site if anything interests you - their earrings are really good, too). I can’t wait to wear the belt with a black boyfriend blazer, trousers, oversized jeans, etc
ALRIGHT, LET’S GET INTO IT:
How to Be a Better Home Cook
When we fantasize about cooking, it’s easy to romanticize a Nancy Meyers film. Airy open windows in an inviting, plentiful, lived-in kitchen. Layers of copper pots and pans above the stove, worn cookbooks on the shelves, herbs growing on the windowsill and nature's bounty on the counters.
Perched on the marble island, a French rattan basket sits with a mélange of market finds including beautifully baked artisanal breads - rye, focaccia, pain au levain - all asking to be torn into, sliced and enjoyed. Resting on cloche-covered cake dishes, lay buttery croissants and a lemon poppy seed bundt cake, a slice or two already enjoyed. Adjacent to the sweets stand large glass jars full of ingredients they’re made with - flour, sugar, brown sugar - little specs of delicious dust eagerly awaiting dips from measuring cups.
The fresh flowers glow, and an abundance of bright round fruit live in the most exquisite bowls you ever did see. And as you whisk around the kitchen, whipping up your feast, light dancing through your soft hair, wine is being poured, laughs are being had, and it’s a lovely day as Bill Withers plays*.
Ok, end scene.
Cut to reality, which for me, was far less Meryl Streep as Jane Adler in It’s Complicated and more so Goldie Hawn as Annie Goolihy in Overboard. It was nowhere near a fantasy and more like a nightmare, but I had no choice other than to return to the stove in my tiny LA apartment repeatedly out of necessity, as I couldn’t afford to eat out (but always joined my friends for drinks).
