The Weekly Edit
an iconic bag makes a comeback, the attention economy, 20 years of podcasts (!!!), saying byeee to clothes that make you feel sad and so much more!
Hi and welcome back! I was on the East Coast, thoroughly enjoying family time, gardens bursting with hydrangeas, Mister Softee, all the humidity (yes, I love it!) and verrrry little phone time hitting my daily average screen time goal of under one hour (phewwww!).
How are you? I hope you’ve been well!
Let’s get into this week’s edit:
A fun quick scroll down memory lane: Apple Podcasts 20 Years. Since the medium came to iTunes in 2005, it has exploded. To celebrate 20 years, the Apple team put together 20 favorites that best exemplify how far podcasting has come and where it can go in the next two decades (Serial - 2014! Who remembers?).
Celine just brought back the Phantom bag. Micheal Rider presented his first collection for Celine (the branded bikes parked out front were a nice touch) as the newly appointed creative director and included a newly updated reinterpreation of the iconic bag.
Meta invested $3.5 Billion in EssilorLuxottica, just under a 3% stake, in the race for the AI glasses push. I’m still not convinced.
Prime Day was anticipated to generate a record $23.8 billion in online spend. INSANE! Did you buy anything?! I was influenced and bought this.
The original Hermès Birkin bag that was designed for the actress Jane Birkin was sold at auction in Paris on Thursday for more than $10 million, becoming the most valuable fashion item sold at auction in Europe, according to Sotheby’s. The sale surpassed even a hat that had belonged to Napoleon Bonaparte. You can watch the auction here (second slide).
The Devil Wears Prada sequel has started filming and I for one am excited! Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, Stanley Tucci and Kenneth Branagh star in the sequel which will have Priestly, still the head of Runway, contending with the headwinds of publishing, with the magazine now in a diminished state. Blunt’s onetime assistant will now be an executive at a luxury brand conglomerate that advertises with Runway. The real question: will there be influencers?
I found this very interesting: Dr Bronner's announced that it was quitting B Corp, the global certification scheme that honors companies for having high standards when it comes to their social and environmental performance. Bronners said the accreditation wasn't strict enough, and it accused the international organization of being too quick to allow some of the world's largest companies to join. It accused the scheme of "enabling greenwashing and purpose washing by multinationals." Dr Bronner's singled out its continuing opposition to coffee capsule brand Nespresso getting B-Corp certification in 2022.
Is two-tier shopping about to become a thing? Costco thinks so. Their U.S. locations that now open at 10 a.m. will open an hour earlier Sunday through Friday but only for certain people. Holders of its Executive Member card, which at $130 a year costs double the standard Gold Star membership fee, are allowed into the store early.
Good idea: SPAREFARE, an eBay-like marketplace matches people looking to sell nonrefundable trips they can’t use to other travelers at a steep discount. Now you can travel for less by buying someone else’s vacation.
What makes someone cool? Being extroverted, hedonistic, powerful, adventurous, open and autonomous. These six traits can determine your ‘it’ factor, according to researchers who measured coolness around the globe.

“I noticed something about the Europeans around me that was inspirational and chic- how women age gracefully, how people aren’t afraid to really EAT, how Italians that are complete strangers feel perfectly comfortable touching you lovingly, how people sing in public.” I very much enjoyed this ‘Some Things I find Incredibly Chic.’
